Roy Marsh is co-owner of the Martial Arts Academy of Southern Pines and is the Head Instructor of its Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program. Roy is a brown belt under Rodrigo Gracie and is focused on helping his students reach their goals, whether its self-defense, competition or fitness and health. He believes in providing as much technical instruction as possible while keeping the classes fun and engaging.

If you need a saw and all you have is a flashlight, it isn’t going to do you much good, even if it’s the best flashlight in the world. This is why it’s important to be as open-minded as possible when studying martial arts and a fact that MMA has partially exposed (a world champion boxer on his back is a BJJ white belt). I say “partially” because MMA is a sport with a certain set of rules (created for certain spectator expectations) so it can’t speak to the efficacy of arts outside it’s restrictions or its sport-specific purpose.
